Why Do Dance Exams?

Dance Lab –Exams

WHAT ARE THEY?

  • Students participating enter their exams in small groups and are given a professional assessment by an examiner supplied by Southern Federation of Dance or Cecchetti
  • The students are examined on the syllabus they have been learning in terms 1 & 2.

WHY DO EXAMS?

  • Completion of exams can lead to becoming a fully qualified dance teacher.
  • Gives the student a long term goal to aim for and completing the goal.
  • To encourage and build confidence in performing.
  • Assists with the dancer’s growth.
  • Students being assessed generally work harder towards exam syllabus work.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

  • Over terms 1 & 2 the students are assessed and selected for exams.
  • A letter is sent home in Term 2 informing families of the dates, times & costs.
  • It is up to the families to then decide if the student will participate.
  • We will only recommend students if we feel the experience will be positive.
  • If students do not participate they will not be held back or treated differently.

WHAT DO I NEED?

  • See exam uniform in uniform section
  • Jazz, Tap & Classical may require theory booklets

WHEN & WHERE ARE THEY HELD?

  • Generally exams are held in first 3-4 weeks of Term 3 for Jazz & Tap.
  • Ballet exams can be any time from May – November depending on the level.
  • Jazz and Tap exams are held in the Dance Lab Somerville studios
  • Ballet at Dance lab Studios & Ministry of Dance Studios in North Melbourne and Dance Lab Studios
  • Please be aware that all exams may be scheduled in school hours

WHY IS THERE AN EXAM FEE & WHAT DO I GET FOR MY MONEY?

  • A small portion of the fee for the exam covers the hire of the venue and administration costs.
  • The remaining fee is paid to Southern Federation of Dance or Cecchetti Ballet examiner.
  • Each student upon passing receives a detailed written report on each exercise and dance shown with both encouraging and constructive comment and certificate with a mark.
  • It will take approximately 6 weeks for written reports and certificates to be returned and they will be given out in class time. Keep in mind that each student has an individually written report and there are many students preparing for exams, this contributes to the 6 week wait.
